Framing Exploration Strategy

This webinar will introduce how to frame exploration strategy and how to apply a framing workflow and toolset that are uniquely helpful in this domain. Exploration, whether for oil & gas, minerals, or energy transition opportunities, faces a few unique, yet typical, set of strategic decisions which lend themselves to a structured Decision Quality approach to bring clarity. A few of the exploration decisions we will discuss include: 

• New Venture or Country Entry Strategy – Addresses entry method, partner identification and selection, opportunity focus, data acquisition plan, offramps, and stakeholder management. 

• Block/Area Strategy – Once acreage is captured; play/opportunity order, partner selection, rig strategy, drilling pace, dry hole tolerance, and scenario outcome planning. 

• Appraisal Strategy – Includes scenario outcome planning both pre- and post-discovery, follow-on appraisal well order, data to collect in a discovery well versus subsequent appraisal wells, and seismic programs. 

We will discuss all three of these types of exploration decisions, with relevant case study examples. The aim is to illustrate when standard framing tools are sufficient and when de-risking framing tools such as the Uncertainty Table and Oracle/Scenario Trees maximize insight and broaden the robustness of exploration decision frames.
